LAND:
The academy is located on one complete acre in the beautiful mountainside of upper Buena Vista. You can read the story about how God literally brought this property to our front door... click here.
GYMNASIUM:
The Cancha:
The main gymnasium is a multi-purpose facility with its primary use being indoor soccer and basketball.
EDUCATION CENTER:
Classrooms:
The facility has 2 classrooms. These smaller and private rooms are used for daily education program, tutoring, and reading/writing programs. The classrooms are also used as break-out rooms for team meetings, devotions, and group times.
Bathrooms:
The locker room is equipped with private lockers, bathroom stalls, and shower stalls. Hygiene is a huge problem in the town of Buena Vista, and is the reason for much of the illnesses that we encounter here. Without bathrooms at their homes, these facilities allow the boys to be able to shower (and learn about the importance of hygiene) on a regular basis, especially after practices and games.
Weight-room:
Critical to any competitive athletic program, the weight room will be used for strength and conditioning. Led by a certified athletic trainer, this avenue of weight training will be another method to teach larger principles of attaining goals, discipline, and character.
HOUSING:
Ministry House:
An important part of this vision is for our family (Johnson's), at a minimum, to live onsite and be directly connected to the Boys Academy on a daily basis. A large part of the calling to start this ministry involves teaching the future leaders of this village how to be godly husbands and fathers, and we believe that in order to do this a daily example is necessary. The boys will have their daily nutrition snack in the home every day and are also welcome during off-hours. Living onsite also allows us to manage the facility and oversee the ongoing programs as a family, and reflects our long-term commitment to see the vision through.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
Modesty & Simplicity:
It is important for us to make this project happen on as tight of a budget as possible. While we do want the facilities to represent quality, we do not want to imply that a building is where “ministry happens”. Rather, we want to teach the boys that we worship and minister through daily life. While this facility will serve a purpose in bringing the boys to a central location on a daily basis, we don’t want it to be an elaborate or excessive facility that can perhaps send the wrong message.
Message to Community:
It is important for us to show by example that a blessing is to be shared. Our desire is that the boys of Buena Vista, and to some extent the community in general, would feel as if this facility is their own.
